recurring dream

heya

time, once again then, to wallow in the ways of the sentimental hygiene of nostalgia. although this, strangely, has a modern spin on it, look you see.

it is so that i have covered what is (essentially) the same ground as i do here before, which is to say had a gander at the legendary 80s computer game what is Football Manager. for that previous look, by all means click on these words right here to be whisked away to it. or, you know, just read this.

but, that said, whereas the link in the last bit will take you off to the wonders of the Commodore 64 version, which was, is and always shall be the best, here is (virtually) the same game in a totes different way. also on a different sort of computer.

yes, that is a screenshot of Football Manager, or as it is for some (unknown) reason now called Football Star Manager, off of my (relatively) new mobile phone thing. sure, it looks slightly different to how it did on proper computers, but close enough. and, for those of you in a rush, the gameplay is exactly, and wonderfully, as it was.

how did i come to get this on my phone? outside, of course, of the obvious thing of purchasing it and then downloading it. a quite rare instance of web, possibly social media (i do not recall the specifics) advertising actually working on me. leaving aside any accidental taps or clicks, a quite random guess or similar calculation, for me, would be that for every ten thousand (give or take) bits of advertising i am presented with on the internet, it's a miracle if i click on as many as one. but, when i saw the familiar face of Kevin Toms (more on that later) flicker up, i was immediately interested. so much so that i clicked, looked, liked what i saw, and bought.

does internet advertising work? yes, kind of. in this instance, it just made me aware of something that i would have bought as soon as i knew of it. so, the advert did not make me buy it as such, just alerted me to the fact that i could. rather like when i get mails or other such (similar) notifications that the David Bowie Estate has made available another thing to buy. it is not like i need all that much persuading or coercion to hand over any amount of money which takes their fancy to request.

so, the game itself. yes, as you can see in the above (and if you recall the original), it stays faithful to the original game in many respects. divisions are made up of just 16 (sixteen) teams, and you only play each side once, no home and away nonsense. further, and also yes, as you can work out in the above, it is not so much that i am a master of the game (well, i am), but it is perfectly possible to set the skill level really, really low and win every single match. which strangely does not make the game any less fun at all. at least not for moi

for a bit of nostalgia (or history, if you are not, like me, an increasingly doddering, dithering old f*** and didn't happen to be there "at the time"), it was so that Football Manager was one of them "rites of passage" games, expected to be owned when you got your first (or second) computer (or even third). owners of the greatest computer ever, the Commodore 64 (of course) were expected to have this, Impossible Mission and Bruce Lee. with the latter being a pirate copy taped off of a mate's pirate copy, as the original never ever appeared available for sale anywhere.

one particularly unusual aspect of this computer game is that the bloke what made (or programmed) (or designed, since that is what it says on the box) the game had his picture on the cover. this was not the norm. actually, unfairly, it wasn't really standard for the game developers names to be so prominent. a chosen few were, mind. if you picked up, for instance, an Activision game and it said it was off of David Crane, you knew it would be ace. similar, other names came to be known, such as Tony Crowther and Jeff Minter.

right, the game. how does it differ from the Commodore 64 version? for starters, it loads somewhat faster. and by somewhat i do indeed mean considerably. infamously the tape of the game took a neat, round twenty (20) minutes (not a typo) to load up. this mobile phone version sees you press the icon and boom, off you go. further, or also, and this one is a massive plus - you can save your game on this new version of it. as i remember, you could not on the Commodore 64 one (at least not on the tape version), but this might have been a feature of Football Manager 2, which i played somewhere along the line but do not remember ever owning. whereas it was kind of nice always starting from scratch, this works out all the more better.

if you clicked on my initial link above too, i can very happily confirm that it is not possible for your brother to completely knack your hard work by just leaving someone pressing the space bar down, whizzing through all options and eventually leaving you playing games with only 2 or 3 players in your team. this was a flaw that one suspects Kevin Toms never contemplated, but all the same has addressed it. nice one, squire.

any real negatives to the game? well, yes, one major one. when it comes to each match, you can select to just skip it, watch the "new" style (pictured above, earlier) or watch them in "retro" mode. of course i clicked on retro, expecting (presuming) to see them classic, chunky Commodore 64 players in action. that is not what happened.

my friends, what you think you are seeing is indeed what you are seeing. yes, sadly, retro mode takes you to the world of the ZX Spectrum, where graphics or whatever all had to be just one colour. quite a shame, and a missed opportunity. perhaps there will be some "update" or other such "patch" to fix this issue, i don't know. would be nice.

with respect to the game itself, by modern standards it is amazingly simplistic, but back then it was totally amazing how much you could do. management of a football team involves buying and selling players (you can do one of each a week), selecting the side, taking a loan if needed, and that's it. as time has gone by, football manager games have become exhaustively complex. which is good for those who like the strategy side of it, but bad for we, the people like i, who just want some simple and straightforward fun.

let me assure you, as per the original release company name states, this is well and truly addictive. i have found myself fiddling with this long after bedtime, saying "go on, just one more match, then". only now when i do that i do not have Mum knacking us for not going to bed on time on school nights. there are some benefits to being (ostensibly) grown up.

one extra added to the game, and a very welcome one, is the presence of the European Cup. this is in addition to the league (of course) and the "cup" regular, which is presumed to be but not explicitly stated as being the FA one. so far i have won the European Cup a few times, and yes, i can qualify that by saying i do indeed leave it on the lowest skill level.

something what is even more excellent about this new version of Football Manager is the price. this game, at least for my phone and at time of writing, costs a mere one solitary penny south of £5. most agreeable indeed, especially as this is considerably south of what the tape for the Commodore 64 cost.

do i recommend or suggest, or endorse, investing in this new Football Manager game? it most certainly has my blessing, for what that is worth. since i have borrowed some pics to comment on it (fairly, i do believe), here are some links to go get it -

Kevin Toms on that there Facebook can be found by clicking here

Kevin Toms official site, linking to this game and more, is found via clicking here

certainly not for the first time and (probably) not for the last i am not so sure i have "done" a review, of sorts, properly. but, if there is some decent, or useful, sort of information or insights in the above, nice one.

right, off i go to probably play the game some more. but in conclusion, yes, it is a faithful adaptation of the original, and that is a very good thing indeed. for me, at the least, and for you if you were also a fan of this tremendous, groundbreaking (at the time) game.

now, if only someone would make it so that you could have the Bruce Lee or (maybe even better) the Frankie Goes To Hollywood game on my phone, and then maybe i might not ever sleep again, or only when the battery on it goes flat.

one i never got around to renting

hi there

it would be fairly, if not momentarily, easy to let this post get sidetracked. well, not that i have a sterling track record for keeping on whatever subject, look you see, but still. my wish here is to just look at one film what i never rented but often considered doing so, but sorry in advance if it gets all sidetracked every now and then.

my assumption (or presumption) is that i am not quite alone with this. for those of us alive and well in the era of video shop rentals - and many of us were there to see it start, rise, diminish and disappear (almost) - it is probable that there was always that one tape not rented. sure, there were lots of films in a video store not rented by every customer, but i mean that one film that you always considered but never committed to. and so never saw, at least not necessarily on a rental tape.

fair use, i think
for me that one film was something called Hangar 18. it was a video cover that looked interesting mostly because it didn't have much to it, and was forever sat on the second from bottom shelf of one rack, seldom seeming to be selected.

once or twice, i can remember, i picked up the box and gave quite serious consideration to renting. but, as outlined above, i never did get around to committing time or cash to doing so. from what i can remember it was a fairly cheap tape to have rented too, since it was neither a new film nor a "classic" in demand. how much, exactly? as i remember it, some tapes were available for 50p or £1 for the night, and this one was likely in the southern region of price.

why did i not ever get around to renting? i am not sure, to be honest. this was all pre X Files and similar, and there really wasn't a whole lot of stuff or interest circulating about things such as Roswell and Area 51 in the north of England. science fiction, mostly, was all limited to, or expected to be Star Wars, or the superior Battle Beyond The Stars, and of course the proper, should have remained only, 70s original version of Battlestar Galactica, of which i would consider myself a "proper fan" even if there are one or two people out there who say that i am not. f*** them, really.

so, how, exactly (or precisely), did i end up seeing this film? it is safe, and fair, to say that the video place where i would have rented it off of has long since gone. and no, no sense of nostalgia struck me to seek out the video, or disc, of it online. or even one of them infamous "downloads". rather simply, it turned up on the tele one afternoon, over the festive season (Christmas), and so i thought yeah, why not have a look at it.

and what do i think of the film (Hangar 18), now that i (kind of) watched it? it was all right, as it happens. one of "those" types of films which have a "repeat viewing possible" sense to them, whilst why that is so resides in the category of inexplicable. mostly because of the familiar cast, i guess. other than the well known Robert Vaughan, just about everyone in the film makes you say "oh i know him (and sometimes her), it's that one out of that other film". you know what i am talking about.

having no real idea what to expect of the film, other than it being some sort of alien thing being stored in some sort of military base, i was rather foolishly taken by surprise that it was a "conspiracy theory" or hide the truth sort of film. to this end, the plot themes (if not direct action, of course) appears to borrow heavily, or "be inspired" by, Capricorn One. actually, a double bill of that film and this film would be one excellent lazy afternoon.

so how is it, for clarity of provenance, that i eventually (or "finally") got to see this film? i was just browsing through the television guide and noted that Talking Pictures TV (here you go link fans) were about to start showing it one afternoon, so figured why not. and why not.

yes, indeed, even by 79 - 80 standard, the special effects and alien spaceship designs were somewhat lacking and rather cheap. i think back then, without cheap computer gimmicks to use, they were kind of forced, or felt compelled, to make sure they had a decent story which was interesting to follow, acting as sort of quasi compensation for a lack of visuals.

do i regret not seeing Hangar 18 somewhat sooner? not particularly. whereas i enjoyed it, and it was fun to finally see, i suspect i might have felt rather disappointed paying to watch what is essential a television movie (or made for tv film). making it rather apt that i did indeed just wait, albeit not deliberately so, for it to turn up on the tele.

get your hands off my counter you tourist filth

aloha ma laila

it is so that the majority of people who have ever lived in the last two hundred or so years (whether now presently alive, or since deceased, look you see) associate the date on which this was published, it being 20 January, with the arrival, or if you like landing, of Captain James Cook in Hawaii. his arrival, in 1778 no less, was at Waimea on an island of Hawaii known as Kauai, fact fans. given consideration to how this is the first (documented) instance of what is known called a European landing in the place, it feels quite right to mark the anniversary with a post.

well, ok, yes, sometimes it is so that this particular date (the twentieth of January) is known as "inauguration day" in the USA. but that is conditional on elections, a non-incumbent person being elected (or manipulated) as president, if it is a Sunday and so on. a right headache, it is, to work out if any particular year has an inauguration day, so it is best to just leave it aside as it isn't all that important a thing anyway.

besides, no inauguration day has had the long term influence or consequence what James Cook touring Hawaii has had. probably, at least, i have not read up much on it, but my understanding of the modern world is that assumption and opinion reign supreme. things like surfing, and that smart Theme From Hawaii Five-O (but not the show, that was quite dull), probably would not exist were it not for Cook going to Hawaii, and no US President has ever created (directly or indirectly) anything as cool as them.

how, exactly, did James Cook's trip (or sojourn) to Hawaii work out, or go? as in, what happened? this is probably something i should have read up on before writing this, but did not do so. but i would like to think a good deal of it served as, in many respects, inspiration for some key moments in A Fistful Of Traveller's Cheques

for those of you who don't know, or are unaware, A Fistful Of Traveller's Cheques is the third best thing ever to be done by Comic Strip Presents, with the first two of course being Bad News and the most excellent film The Supergrass. quite interchangeable, it is, which is the absolute best of the three, but then i suppose i shall forever and always love Bad News above much in this life, or presumably the next.

no, it probably isn't likely that James Cook turned up in Hawaii dressed like Lee Van Cleef. also, i would be surprised to learn of it being so that when Cook landed there was such a thing as hotels, and that one of them would have been called Hotel Bastardos, as that does not sound particularly Hawaiian. not that i am too familiar with how they speak.

did the people of Waimea, acting as they were in the role of impromptu ambassadors for the whole place, welcome James Cook and his crew? the latter element (the crew) presumably being there, since i suspect one chap could not have sailed one of them big ships all alone. but maybe he did, for all i know, as i declined to read up on it all prior to writing.

i would like to think that the welcome he (they) got was not quite so rough and inhospitable as the below video (yes, we've got a video). and yet also, with my view being that the whole episode somehow influenced A Fistful Of Traveller's Cheques, i suppose it would have to be along these lines for my theory to be correct. or however that should be worded.

that is a scene which has not ceased to amuse me over two centuries across a number of decades. blimey, wow, i am old, where did time drift to. no idea why this is so, it has just always appealed to my sense of humour, i guess.

so much so, as point of fact, that i have longed wished to use the term "Tourist Filth" as the name for one thing or another. probably a band, at some stage, as that would be a really cool name for a band. back when music was decent, of course, but still. with no music ability at all, i could not form a group myself, but i am pretty sure that i used the name (Tourist Filth) for a pretend band in the game Rock Star Ate My Hamster on the Commodore 64.

on the whole, i would consider it improbable, yet remarkable, if for some reason in Hawaii James Cook was greeted by a quasi mock Spaniard, brandishing a hammer, wearing mirror sunglasses and a string vest. perhaps they should just say that actually, yes, it did happen like that, so as to make history far more interesting. well, no, history is interesting. appealing was the word i was looking for.

have i any ambition or desire to visit Hawaii? well, any time in my life (thus far) what has seen me kind of follow the path what James Cook had been on before (rather than after) has worked out very well indeed, in truth. so, i have nothing against doing so. but, if what was presented to me (improbably) was a straight choice between Hawaii or staying at Hotel Bastardos, then the latter would very comfortably win.

right, that's that, then. whatever it is you decide to do to celebrate the anniversary of Captain James Cook arriving (kind of) in Hawaii (or inauguration day, should you insist or be American), i hope it all goes very well indeed.

while i looked around for my possibilities

heya

it was so that, a little while ago, we had some snow, look you see. this is, i confess, neither extraordinary or out of the ordinary, in particular not for this stage (or, if you will, time) of the year. but, still, some of you seem to quite like to see this sort of thing. no, not that sort of thing, mucky types, i mean variations of scenes of snow.

for those who like to observe, or keep note of such things, the below images and videos (yes, we have got a video. or two) represent the final "new" ones taken with my old camera. a post is due to appear later in the year which relies on such taken with it, but still.

rest assured, Commodore 64 fans. yes, it is (most decidedly) so that the "new" phone what i have, for one cannot see one progressing too far without such a device in the modern world, does indeed allow for images and them "GIF" things to be taken in this most delightful of formats.

a good deal, or partial amount, of the above seems to represent the duality of reality of having some snow, then. yes, it does look all picturesque and lovely and so forth, but also it serves to make everything rather wet. your attention is drawn, if you have not noticed already, to the rather muddy area which surrounds that perfectly serviceable table and benches, or seating area.

so, yes, the new phone. it was during the taking of these pictures (and video) that a decision was finally, inevitably made. after a period of it (the old phone) playing up a bit, i was giving getting a new one some consideration. mostly the issue was the battery, which had started dropping faster than a classical or traditional English cricket batting line up. despite assurances that the "charge" on the battery was at 100% (or just slightly south) when i took any image (or video) shown here, after taking such, the phone elected to switch off, claiming the battery was devoid of charge.

yes, it did allow me to switch it back on and take further (like, for instance, the "animated GIF" thing in Commodore 64 mode below), only for the cycle of switching off to repeat. this was nowhere near as much fun as you might thing, and so a new one was procured.

let me not bore you with details, or specifics, or even fragments, of the new phone then. i would have no wish to cloud or influence any decision you may make on any similar such device you wish to purchase. the market for phones is competitive, saturated and ferocious. my view, or "opinion" if we have retained the right to hold such, is that the absolute best phone in the world is the one which does all that you would have it do.

but, that said, yes, a major requirement for me is cost. as in £ or $ or even € and of course ¥ for nihon no tomodachi, assuming they have use for such devices. which is likely. i am happy, no, delighted, to confirm that whereas i was (reluctantly) prepared to pay (really slightly) north of £100 for a new phone, as it turned out i secured the procurement of such for south of that. win.

for some reason, though, i would suspect (or imagine) that anyone reading this right now would be rather less interested in any phone business i have done, more so in snow or winter type images.

indeed the above is a minor, and modest, waterfall, presented for viewing pleasure in the greater glory of Commodore 64 mode. no, it was not so that the prevailing seasonal weather conditions had caused the stream section of this river to "freeze over" as such. from what i recall, it is much more of an American phenomenon to see this happen to a body of water.

whereas a picture of a waterfall can be something pleasant to gaze upon, it of course does not quite capture the essence, or being, of such. not even in Commodore 54 mode, surprisingly. a nice bit of video, then, to all the more better illustrate the wonders of the waterfall. even if it is just a modest one.

oh yes, i did indeed have to stand rather carefully as i filmed the above, due to the damp, moist, wet and rather slippery ground conditions. to the disappointment of some, i suppose, but no doubt to the satisfaction of others, it was so that i did not fall, or slip, or get too unsteady. not that the video above is a great example of steady camera work.

more details on my new(ish) phone? very well, if you insist. other than the pricing, it is also off of a brand which i have come to like, which was nice. the two previous phones off of them served me exceedingly well, outlasting the presumed average lifespan of two years. it does appear to have become a trifle difficult, all of a sudden, to procure this brand, for some reason. strange, and seems to happen when i take a shine to a phone, such as what happened with that Blueberry one.

a waterfall must, or at the least would usually, see the water carried (flowed) move somewhere. in this instance, yes, towards a stream (actually beck, but for ease of reference), and indeed here is a picture of the destination.

but no, not in the greater good or glory of Commodore 64 mode. by this stage my now referred to as old phone had switched itself off some four or five times, and the novelty factor of such had really, really grown to be quite tiresome. so, i opted to just do "regular" things with images, which is point and click and move on, rather than engage in the subtle intricacies required by Commodore 64 mode.

quite so, yes, i did indeed need to stand quite steadfast and carefully to take the above image, for a slip into the waters was a significant risk. whilst doing so, it was entirely possible to take a few seconds of video for anyone interested in such.

enthusiasts of videos should note, or be aware, that the above is the last video clip to feature in this post. and, as a consequence i guess, also that it is the last bit of video done with the old phone.

should it be that my geography, or general sense of placement, has not failed me (often it does), it is not the case that this stream, or beck, flows into a river which directly flows in an eastern direction. at the very least, not overtly. my understanding is that such things as rivers, seas and what have you are all quite natural phenomenon and thus excluded, but one would not at all be surprised to see them French try and block the (obviously superior) waters of the UK flowing from our east coast towards their suspiciously better blocked than their east ever was western border. perhaps they will demand, and undoubtedly from jealousy, malice and spite this is born, that any such waters must produce requisite paperwork before it is allowed to touch their inferior lands.

to sort of (kind of) bookend these images (since video is no more), then, some further not specifically featuring water in terms of bodies of water images then. snow is, i think you will find, some variation on "water", as in i think it is water based in structure. or whatever it is what rain is off of.

it is not so that i have ever considered myself to be a "photographer" as such, nor do i profess any great skill at it. but, i quite like how that one has come out. not that it was planned as such, i simply tried to take an image in such a way that not too many other people were in it, although some strayed in at the side there.

any major issues or flaws with my new phone? well, it is quite large. massive, in truth, to be sure. big, it is. this is something i should have been aware of prior to purchasing, and yes that information was available. i just glanced as the "specs" and said yeah, that sounds all right, without really stopping to consider just how many inches (stop your childish saucy giggles you filthy lot) it was in terms of shape (stop it) and indeed size. no doubt i shall just get used to it, if i am not already. but yes, quite strange fiddling with something so massive in my hand.

one last image for this post, then, showcasing how the clouds what brought the snow had effectively placed a blanket (or screen) blocking the scenery. also, seagulls. yes, there they are on the roofing, either just watching the pleasant, picturesque scene, or waiting to pounce on some food.

well, anyway, that's about that really. i think i have said all that i can on the subject of this brief flurry of snow, and padded it out with some other stuff. hopefully one or two of the pictures, or videos, were pleasing or interesting.

be excellent to each other!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

notes on speculative pension portfolio diversification

greetings

just another informal (yet informative, i trust) look at my provisional retirement (fiscal) plans, look you see. whereas i claim no expertise in this particular subject (or any), no doubt some shall have in place quite similar plans to me. others, of course, will wish to see what i am doing in regards of such arrangements, so that they know it is the wrong thing to do and do something else instead.

my preferred form of pension (or provident fund, whichever it most closely resembles) fund is that one which goes by the name of "national lottery". the reasons for investing in this particular one are as simple as they are straightforward. costs for entering are somewhat minimal, the roi (that's return on investment) rate is frankly staggering and, if your policy number happens to be "drawn", you can pretty much retire almost immediately. why would one not trust their future financial safety to such?

recently i have, somewhat unexpectedly, been lured into diversifying my investment in this particular scheme. usually i have remained an investor (of sorts) in the classical variation of this "lottery" pension fund. for fairly obvious reasons i have been reluctant to invest in the so-called "euro millions" scheme, with easily the most overt of those obvious reasons being that it costs more. however, their recent proposal - that of a £181 million (181,000,000 one pound coins, for clarity) - was quite the irresistible investment opportunity.

sadly, and i can only assume to presume this was a colossal clusterf**k of an administrative error, it turned out that they went and gave my pension payout (all one hundred and eighty one million pound coins of money) in its entirety to, and i can scarcely believe i am typing this, a Frenchie. off of France. goodness knows what sort of trivial things they shall waste my old age nest egg on, but i suppose i should say that i hope they enjoy it.

by means of some sort of perverse sense of balanced compensation, the administrators of the euro millions pension fund did determine that my policy number(s) did entitle me to a part pension payment. the amount which this came to (and let us not lose sight of my initial investment being £2.50) was somewhere around £3.70, or if you like one hundred and eighty million nine hundred and ninety thousand nine hundred and ninety six (ish) pound coins south of the amount i had in good faith reasonably expected to be getting. oh.

having no real sense of idea or clue as to what to do with this partial pension (i did call a broker, and a financial advisory service, but in both instances i was told to f*** off when i revealed the amount i was wondering what to do with), i made an impulsive and immediate investment decision at the shop. that is, of course, the scratch card pension membership, or "scratchie", which you can see above.

your attention is drawn, in the first instance, to the pension liability waiver which is published on the reverse of the "scratchie". a side, true, that is seldom studied by investors. they do not hide the fact of how this retirement annuity is very little else but a gamble. well, all investments are, to some extent. by undertaking to enter this pension fund system, you are by default acknowledging that you accept there is only something of a 20% chance of securing any sort of later life income. from what i recall, this is around about the same kind of odds what the gay robot told the illegal people smuggler he had of surviving an asteroid field or something in that Star Wars film. no, the other one.

a question that some of you will have (no doubt) would of course pertain to whether or not i stayed true and loyal to the manner and means by which one "does" a "scratchie", or indeed "scratchy" if that is your preference for spelling. regrettably, no. for those of you less informed in the social mannerisms of this, it is quite often the case that people what buy these pension fund schemes, often in multiple numbers, do not hesitate to stand at the very till where they purchased them and scratch away. they shall do so no matter how large a queue waits for service behind them, for they either do not care or as point of fact appreciate that they might be unwitting spectators to seeing someone "win" a pension.

others are, of course more (or less, depending on your perspective) considerate. rather than stand at the till to scratch and block the administration of service, they will instead take just a few steps and commence the ceremonial scratching of the "scratchie" in the shop doorway. this serves a strange double purpose, as it equally blocks people from entering the premises just as it prevents other patrons from leaving. i opted not to do this, either, at all.

perhaps my reluctance to do the "scratchie" in a way which would cause maximum disruption or at the least a bit of a delay to others put a kind of jinx or curse on me, then. that, to me, would be a perfectly reasonable way to explain why this particular pension fund investment failed. and failed it did, but not miserably. for some reason your pension card is (or was) required to reflect three equal amounts of the value of the pension, whereas mine was 33% short of this optimal target. this i discovered quite some time after investment, at home, when i remembered that i had this policy and took a coin to it.

will i be dabbling, or diversifying, into this "scratchie" pension scheme again in the future? no. well, not immediately, at least as far as i have any plans. the things just hold little appeal, if any, for me. others, i appreciate, appear to invest in them to the point of addiction. perhaps they should not, but how someone else arranges their pension funding is precisely none of my business.

there are some of you (and i like to regard you as the more elegant percentage of readers) who are wondering what, exactly happened to the remainder of my provisional pension payout. as the image presented of the "scratchie", in the greater good of Commodore 64 mode, is only a £1 one, what became of the balance of the funds received?

it was most decidedly so that a lack of imagination momentarily struck me, so i just requested yet one more pension policy off of the "euro millions". rather than waste time curating and selecting my own numbers for this one, i merely requested the "lucky dip" form of portfolio.

has this pension policy been any more, or as usual less, successful than previous ones? momentarily the matter is very much all that schrƶdinger's cat thing, for at the time of writing it is not so that the pension fund administrators have "drawn" the numbers in correlation to fund membership numbers.

generally i have noted (or observed) that any such instance of referencing this form of pension provision incentive is accompanied by a warning along the lines of stating that winners know when to quit, and also that when the fun stops one should stop. i am unsure such a requirements exists for this, but one could not describe my doubt for such as steadfast, so there you go.

continued commodore car wash

hello there

we carry on then, look you see. if you are reading this, then the perils and failings of 2020 are now all behind by some reasonable distance. sort of. oh how lovely it would be if the turning of a year would be enough to bring us all a different fate, but i am not certain such things work in such a way.

to do my (very small) bit for all who take superstition, belief and hope in the passing of time meaning something, let me, relatively early in bold new year, deliver a familiar, popular topic. yes, indeed, another escapade, or adventure, down at a car wash facility, presented in the greater good of Commodore 64 mode.

it resoundingly (as an absolute) remains so that i have no idea at all as to why these images taken whilst at a car wash are so popular with a fairly decent size contingent of you. whenever i post some more images, generally somewhere north of one hundred (100) of you, dear readers, shall click on it all and have a gander. as it is of course very nice, and creates a splendid feeling, whenever someone sacrifices the time to see what i have placed here, but of course i shall repeat what has been a success.

do i get any funny, peculiar, curious or concerned looks off of people as i sit in my vehicle, recording and also documenting my time in the car wash? well, so far as i am aware, not as many people as you might think spend their days hanging around such facilities, watching the machinery work as they observe what people do as it does. unless you happen to have someone in the vehicle with you (which, strictly speaking, you should not as part of the effort of the invisible war on the new plague) then the whole thing is a rather lonely experience. not depressingly so, though.

besides, generally whilst in the car wash i am far too busy making "animated GIF" things and taking pictures to worry too much about what anyone who may be in the same vicinity is doing. should it be so that there is someone hanging around, wondering what i am doing, well, good for them, i say, let it be so that i have provided a matter of curiosity for their minds to tackle, if only momentarily.

how often do i use a car wash facility? generally my aim is for once a month. nothing fancy, mind, usually just the basic "wash and go" option. it does tend to be a jinx when i do it, though. more often than not, within days of using a car wash exceptional filth or dirt will magnetically be drawn to my vehicle, or i shall end up stuck in a remote field.

yeah, that's the soft big floppy brush thing going past the passenger side window, right there in the image above. well, of course, the passenger side for cars where they drive on the proper and correct side of the road. for countries where they don't drive on the proper side of the road - America probably for valid reasons and France, because French, for instance - that would, yes, indeed be the "driver" side what is getting cleaned.

maybe if i did not take quite so many pictures, or made as many "animated gif" things whilst i was in a car wash then i would not struggle to find enough things to write about them.

above, then, in the second (of two) animated things, you can see the brush of floppy washing power just come in and start to cleanse the driver window. that is, of course, the driver side window of a vehicle where they drive on the proper side of the road. for our friends in America, and even them twats in France if for some reason anyone from there is reading this (don't you get fined or put in prison for reading stuff not in French?), yes, that would be the passenger side.

how do car washes work in countries where they drive on the wrong side of the road? i have no idea. presumably conventionally, i suppose. from what i have seen on the tele and in films, American car wash facilities are a hotbed of funky disco grooves, sex and drug money laundering. one can only assume in France there is a lot of needless and unnecessary drama around a car wash, with people faffing on saying stuff like "zut alors" or "mon amis" or "tres bien" or whatever, i am not particularly interested.

quite by accident, then, this final picture would seem to be ever such a clever bookend to this post, contrasting as it does with the first image used. maybe.

right, well, that would be that for this, then. to all of you who click on these car wash montage things presented in the greater good of Commodore 64 mode, may it be so that this one did not disappoint or let you down.

perhaps we all deserve to die of plague

hello there

it would be fair, honest and (indeed) accurate, look you see, for any that know me, or have taken the time to read what i have written, to suggest that i have some nerve (cheek, even) to be critical of the words of others. but, then again, i am but a simple person what does all this for fun, or as a hobby, and not someone paid to write. least of all by an organisation, or institution, which once held the highest of standards and claimed to be the bastion of using language all proper, like.

one of the most perverse crimes of language which prevails in this world emerged yet again, then. quite recently, as it happens, and in relation to those two towers of English culture - football and supermarkets. no less than the bbc (the British Broadcasting Corporation and not that initialisation of bbc) gone done something quite wrong.

perhaps they have edited it since, but for those keen to try and spot their sin before i draw attention to it, here you go, here is the link to it. certainly i would hope they have fixed it by now, but it is not like an editor reviewed it before publishing. or, for that matter, that they have gone back and amended their praise of some people, with particular emphasis on Sir Jimmy.

that there above is more or less a screenshot of the article what i saw, as i saw it. only the slightest edit has been made, to remove the image of some manager or another what was all "copyright" and that of some photo firm. unsure if it was a football club manager or supermarket manager, but would take a guess at the latter.

anyway, did you (although it seems somewhat blurry) spot the clanger, the mistake or the error? indeed, it is the appearance of the quite nonsensical phrase "reverting back" which has so upset me. me and many others, i would trust, even if they view my own writing with disdain.

since revert (or reverting) basically means "to put back" or restore, saying "rever(ing) back" is just nonsensical. everything about anyone who uses the word so suggests (well mostly that they want a punch in the face but also) that they are simply doing so to sound "big" or "clever" without understanding exactly what word they wield. it's like them tw@ts what use variations of unique. you know, saying something is "quite" or "very" unique. ahem, it is unique, or it is not. yes, that black and white.

no doubt, probably, it is so that i have complained about this before (and shall once again, given time enough to do so). but now, well, we are in the world of natural selection, what with this plague and all. it may seem harsh, but perhaps we should not rush to shelter so. if anyone what thinks it is all well and good to use the word "back" directly after any variation of "revert", perhaps they should be directed towards their nearest supermarket, then, and see how the plague judges their lexicon use.

switch off and feel

hi frankie fans

well, this is a trifle strange. no, not celebrating the date (or anniversary) of when i went to go and see Frankie Goes To Hollywood, look you see, but rather how far in advance i am writing this. it turned out that i had a little free time towards the end of 2019, so i thought i would test the patience of post dated blog things.

so, hello the future (and indeed the present where you are) from the past. if it were the other way around, and i was saying hi from the future, that would be quite a trick. one that, alas, i am not aware of how to do.

to celebrate this date, at this point last year i added, shared, "upped", posted or "dropped" a video i made what had Relax off of the very concert i was at as the soundtrack. my thanks again to the person that provided me of a (reasonable) bootleg of the gig i was lucky enough to be in attendance for.

for this year, then, how about a bit (as in the whole performance) of that nine weeks at number one (when it actually meant something as it was based on sales and not easily manipulated "streams") classic that is Two Tribes? yes, me and the rest of the audience are screaming a bit over it, but you can sort of kind of hear the song in the below too.

it was so that the band did Two Tribes as the final encore song, which was a really nice touch. yes, indeed, so far as i am aware, it is so that Two Tribes remains the best, the greatest, the most important and certainly most successful artistic tribute to Mad Max 2 (or The Road Warrior if American) ever created. sure, yes, it was mixed and marketed as an epic nuclear, cold war, USA vs USSR menacing anthem, but lyrically it was inspired by Mad Max 2. members of the band have confirmed this, and when you watch the film (which you should frequently do), the bulk of the lyrics are right there in the opening monologue.

more of the same this time next year? i would certainly expect so, since i have already created and "upped" the video file for 10/01/2022, which shall be (wait a minute let me see) the 35th anniversary of me being at the gig.

a much more better brilliant live adventure

howdy pop pickers

well, yes, look you see. this is indeed a trifle "late" in terms of commenting on this particular music release in relation to when it came out, and when i got it. also, potentially rather useless (or at the least of no practical benefit) for me to say much, since the rather ludicrous decision to make this (and related) releases all "limited" editions means that one cannot buy it. actually one can, but only if they are comfortable in paying the exaggerated prices which can be found for such items as this over on the great and celebrated car boot sale of the internet.

so, volume two (of six planned) of the mid to late 90s Brilliant Live Adventures of David Bowie, then. like the most decidedly underwhelming first one, this is from 1995, ostensibly of the Outside tour. and, i am rather very happy indeed to comment up front, this one, No Trendy RĆ©chauffĆ©, happens to be brilliant. wonderful, as point of fact. which takes some doing for any live album what is not either The Who Live At Leeds or Santa Monica 72

i suppose it helps that the title of the record comes from one of my most beloved of his songs, and indeed that song itself features. feel free to click here for a brief look at my obsession with the tune, if for some reason that sort of thing interests you.

so, how does this differ from the not quite brilliant first volume? oh, if you want to see notes on that one, here you go, link thing for you. whilst there are some similarities in the track selection, this one seems to be far less, erm, esoteric and not driven by selective appeal. certainly, it is almost so that very few "massive" hits feature, and yet a good deal more of this set seems to be the stuff we, the people what are fans, embraced with enthusiasm.

there remains, of course, a heavy leaning on Outside for songs, for that is the album what was being promoted by the tour. believe it or not, as recently as 1995 it was so that artists made the majority of their cash off of record sales, and gigs barely broke even but helped push sales. now, of course, it is all licensing and that which rakes in the coins. but, anyway.

rather just have a look at the picture of the songs from the set, then. oh yes, to clarify a concern or question from the first release, no, this gig is the one what the performances of Under Pressure and Moonage Daydream were used on the Hallo Spaceboy single.

a big, blessed relief was to see the full tilt jazz odyssey of Outside, the often headache inducing sounds of I'm Deranged, failed to make the cut. other, equally full tilt jazz odyssey moments from that album are here, and yes i speak of The Voyeur and in particular The Motel. but here, for some reason, they are quite bearable and almost enjoyable, rather than it being David simply doing what he fancies.

once more i confess i am unfamiliar with all the technical terms, but to tell it like it is the quality of sound recording here is way, way better than that first one. also, and this is a big plus, David appears to be actually enjoying the gig and the performance. something of a peculiar thing, this, but when you take all of Bowie's officially released live recordings, with the possible exception of Santa Monica 72 it is the ones he recorded in the UK and Ireland which he sounds most at ease. best example for this is probably to take Stage and Welcome To The Blackout. same tour, virtually same set, but Blackout, recorded in London, carries the clear sound of an artist loving it and having fun.

moving away from Outside "hyper diary" (or whatever) shenanigans, and the bulk of the set feels like a wishlist from fans who had endure the 80s pop megastardom but wished to hear his moments of musical brilliance instead, thanks. a big, big plus is the revival of Scary Monsters here. for a more recent (at the time) amazing tune, what a joy to see that Jump They Say did get a very good outing at at least one gig.

unequivocally, and without hesitation, the highlight here, for me, is, of course, a performance of Strangers When We Meet. sure, the version performed here is closer to the Outside variation than the Buddha Of Suburbia one which i prefer, but frankly i just fell in love with the song all over again hearing it here, performed live. musically the hypnotic hallucinatory sound of the song translates well to the stage. as for the vocal, wow. no, wow wow wow and wow again. perhaps this is my bias, but in every version i have heard David do (or done), there is a sense of some fractional extra in his delivery of this song, beyond all others. he really, really wanted the world to hear what he was saying in the song, but seems to have kept the meaning or reason of it all surrounded in mystery. may it forever remain so.

enthusiasts of Hallo Spaceboy get not just one, and sadly not as many as three, but two performances of this song. with mercy, it is the original, very much in your face boombastic Outside version we get, and not the Pet Shop Boys one. not that the PSB (see what i did there) version is bad (far from it), just completely void of the dark and sinister edge of the original. anyway, the second, as David tells the audience, is done so he could film it for a possible video. a video which i don't think ever came out, but i could be mistaken.

there was a passing reference to this earlier, but yes, a Ziggy Stardust song features, in the form of Moonage Daydream. what a splendid treat for the fans. he was, no doubt understandably, quite bored of playing "just" the hits and the well known stuff, but still, most lovely that he went "well, f***, why not" and fancied giving this another run.

oh, but for all live albums to be of this quality. if they were, not so many of them would be regarded as merciless cash ins, or contractual obligation releases. this one really is a pleasure to have on the stereo. so far i have played it many times, and it is one that shall get frequent spins over whatever amount of time i have left in this world. ideally, i would like to also be hearing it in the next life, too, or whatever comes. regrettably, like the first release, the farcical decision to make this a "limited edition" means that the CD and vinyl long since sold out, but i believe one can access it via "streaming" things.

nothing anywhere near this good awaits the next two releases, and all evidence says everyone knows that. it is so that the next two are 1997, and that means Earthling. yes, i placed my order as soon as volume three was announced, fearing it would sell out even though i new it - an expanded version of a previously "fan club only" release called Live And Well - would be total sh!t. that the Bowie website was sending out mails one week after you could order it telling you that you could still order it means many feel as i do, then, with the songs and the performances from that time. hey ho.

absolutely no idea if ant of this has been of any use to anyone, but my hope or aspiration would be that it was, at least, of some interest. no doubt i shall scribe further musings on this particular artist again one day, soon.

discover pluntrain dale lane

hey there

it is not uncommon, look you see, for people to ask me (as in, pose) a question which they feel that no one else can answer, or otherwise dare not speak of to anyone else. this is rather flattering, of course, and as flattery will get you everywhere i am always happy to oblige with an answer. or, at the least, provide what information i can.

let us assume that this is what happened in respect of this post. yes, it would be more polite and civil to merrily go along with the idea that someone asked me to establish which is the best, most picturesque and predominantly rural road to get hopelessly and woefully stuck on in North Yorkshire. this sounds considerably better than any such reality in which i decided to allow blind devotion to a previously treacherous sat nav outweigh ideals of common sense.

this would be an unusual question to be posed to me (anonymously, of course), but posed it was, kind of. i set off to find an answer, and it very much is the case that the answer is the imaginatively named Pluntrain Dale Lane, located on or in the hotly contested area on the outskirts of Pickering.

thank you google

exactly how i came to stumble on this hidden gem (and subsequently be stuck there for a while) is a little bit of a curious mystery. in respect of where i was going, the A to B of it, i was unable to determine any rational reason why my sat nav sent me the way it did. but, it did, and i followed it. when it instructed me to turn right and then then immediately left onto Pluntrain Dale Lane, i thought wow, that is an unusual street name. quite soon after that, on seeing it, i thought wow, this does not really look like a conventional road.

but still i turned down it. many a quaint and non-traditional "road" i have travelled in my time, for verk, and this did not look so different. for a start, there were no sheep or similar livestock, it was not on a tank testing range, and there was no sign of the RAF. so, i drove down this road, or if you like lane.

mostly, i would say, this all went rather well. perhaps not "well" as such, but fine. if, that is, fine is closer to "maybe not so good" than well is as a description of it all. we, which is to say my vehicle and i, got roughly (in retrospect) half way down Pluntrain Dale Lane (that sort of "corner dent" in the middle on the map above) when half of we, which would be the van, more or less (ipso facto) said something along the lines of "f*** this" (in vehicle stuck speak) and would move no more. no, not one of my (in)famous breakdowns, but rather "we" had dropped into a significant muddy water sticky area that made traction (if that means movement) not at all possible. oh, bother.

words such as "bother", "gosh" and indeed "flip" were used as i surveyed my plight. the plight of my vehicle, i suppose, since it was the one mostly in distress. as my instinctive sense of survival taught me to do, i of course immediately set about taking some selfies, then had a cigarette or two (sorry), and then made a call or two so as to alert people to my distress, on the off chance that someone may believe it would be worth the effort to rescue me.

yes, i felt incredibly stupid and was quite cross with myself. oh how easy it is to say "i should have known better" in retrospect. no, the road did not look conventional, but it also did not look impenetrable or impossible to pass. and yet here i was, another chapter in the never ending book of accounts of motorists who took remarkably stupid turns on roads and said of doing so "well the sat nav said to do it". we, as people, really are all too often the masters of our downfall.

no, let us not turn this into a crusade against technology, for it was equipment similar to a sat nav which placed me in distress that equally allowed my ultimate (eventual) rescue. i did my best to explain to the nice chap on the phone where i was. to this, he sent me a text message and requested that i "click" (or rather tap) on the "link" in it. after doing so, he was able to use some sort of "gps" thing to pinpoint precisely where i was, and summoned help to fetch me, or rescue me.

i passed the time in the same way virtually anyone would on a cold, wet, rainy morning. yes, i kept mostly outside of the vehicle, taking many selfies and appreciating the focus what cigarettes gave at such a time. with respect to one aspect of that, quite by chance, then, i captured an image of the first rescuer (and first is a key word here) walking towards me, which you can see above.

knowing that i got stuck, and probably via assessing the road a good deal more better than i did before turning down it, this initial rescue chap decided to park on more reasonable, conventional road and take a walk down to see what "the score" (as such) was. as it happened, the "score", or situation, was that he could do absolutely nothing to assist my plight, and suggested that i "sit tight" whilst he called someone to come and do what he termed as being a "special rescue".

some time passed, then. one of the best things one can do when stuck, somewhat trapped, in a remote rural area with scant resources is, of course, drain the battery on your mobile phone as quickly as possible. this i set about doing. i exchanged some emails with the child of the condiment phoenix, based on the continent. she expressed some concern for my predicament. another exceptionally dear friend, also on the continent (yes, you, Faye) took the time to call me. further, i alerted Codename : Magic and Spiros to my plight, and they thought it was most amusing. i expressed my natural concerns, them being that i might get knacked off of a werewolf like in that documentary, or even shotgunned by an angry farmer for blocking his path. to the latter Spiros said that it was more probable that i would get bummed, whatever that means. it does not sound good.

just as i was beginning to suspect that i had taken a sufficient number of selfies, and was wondering if i would be called upon to drink my own urine to survive, the second rescuer arrived, in one of them most splendid land rover things. yes, the ones that are meant for conditions such as i was in, but generally get used in more metropolitan areas, inexplicably so.

he (anonymous for security) was also a bit baffled, at first, as to how to get me (or rather the vehicle) out of where it was. further he was also, at first, most reluctant to refer to me as a complete bellend for getting stuck where and how i did, but i insisted and eventually he agreed. i asked if it was common for people to end up stuck here on Pluntrain Dale Lane and he said no, so far as he was aware over the last several years no one had ever attempted to drive down it. once again i asked the same question, and suggested that he may wish to lie or make something up to make me feel better. his second response was that up to five or six people a day get stuck where i was, so i should not feel bad. this made me feel better. after that he noted the pile of spent cigarettes and was concerned that i must have been stuck for several hours to have smoked so much. oh.

quite a daring, brave rescue in the end, then. the only way to do it, it was determined, was to do a "reverse" tow, as in he pulled up behind me (yet faced forward), hooked me up, he reversed and i had my vehicle in reverse to. of the dangers with this reverse driving, my vehicle ripping the chassis off of his and a bad turn or excess pull free seeing me smack right into his smart land rover were at the forefront. the single biggest problem, however, was that as i would be in reverse, the reversing warning sound would echo in my vehicle, and i was not able to hear the stereo properly.

we did it, then, and after somewhere north or south of three (or so) hours, i was free. and promptly vowed to stick to far more conventional, standard, tarmac and concrete in nature roads. my thanks to those who came to my rescue, my appreciation to those who sent messages of support, concern or amusement through it all.

anyway, i think that just about covers the major (and secondary) aspects of this adventure. by all means, if you feel so inclined, feel free to seek out Pluntrain Dale Lane and get stuck there too. i would suggest, however, that you rather simply take my word for it and accept that all you really need to know of the place is knowledge contained above.

the reward of (or for) justice

heya

just a brief update on that jury duty i did last year. well, when i say jury duty, i perhaps do not mean in the traditional (or conventional) sense, look you see. more so that thing what the Viz does each year (or at least has for the previous three) at Christmas, when readers are invited to pass sentence on a case being heard at Viz Crown Court, Fulchester.

for a reminder for you, or indeed to be presented as brand (spanking) new information, here you go, here is the link to the case in question. but, be warned, for you should know the harsh, explicit details of a sinister, yet perfectly understandable, crime are outlined. sort of.

of more relevance, perhaps, is that what arrived in the post (prior to Christmas 2020, but here we are now) was my reward for agreeing to do my civic duty and be a member of the jury.

as promised off of the Viz, in return for me submitting my verdict (not guilty, of course) and one of them SAE things, i have received recompense, or compensation, for performing this most arduous and challenging of civic duty tasks. two (further) Viz cheap pens are mine, then.

they really are not kidding, or f*****g about to use the lexicon they would appear to be much more familiar and comfortable with. something doing what it says on the box is always a relief in this modern world, and it beggars belief that there could possibly be any cheaper pens in the world than these ones off of Viz, to be sure. whilst they are serviceable, and can (kind of) be used for any function that one would normally use a pen for (writing stuff), neither the materials used or the craft involved in producing them are things one would refer to as artisan.

one really, really nice touch is the compliments slip what comes with the pens. it is printed on a paper of some marginally decent quality, and does indeed make one feel good about themselves. which is what a compliment should serve to do.

how many cheap pens off of the Viz do i have now? truly, i have lost count. every time they have something on the go where you write in (with an SAE) i feel compelled and obliged to do so. also, i have a few pencils off of them, and some very early days pens when they actually bothered to have some rather decent ones made.

if for some reason you want to try (or taste) the lifestyle of owning a Viz cheap pen (or two, normally they send two), well, the address is there in the one picture. just send them an SAE (with a large letter stamp on) and ask, i guess. worst they can do is not send one, and just send a note telling you to f*** off or something mature and sophisticated like that.

each sensation makes a note in my symphony

hello there

this is all, pure and simple, me taking advantage of a reasonably obscure pop culture reference, look you see. and, oh yes, it does indeed feature some images in the greater glory and good of Commodore 64 mode and some carefully edited audio-video thing.

here we are, then. 2021, or if you will to make (much of) what is to follow in this post make sense, 21. perhaps even beyond this year, if you are reading this at some future date. which, in fairness, you would have to be, since i am unsure how you could read it on a previous one.

for quite some time, then, i have speculated about doing something specific for the first calendar date proper of this particular year. many of the events of the year before (2020, for clarity) served as a distraction, believe you me. and yet, here we are.

yes, of course. it is Tommy by The Who (no less) which came to mind when considering the start of this particular year. mindful, of course, that on this album (and those of you familiar with it shall know what is to follow) they did not reference this year as such, but still. let us make things easier (for me) by just referring to it as being the year 21.

it is so that Tommy is referred to in a number of ways. rock opera is the most common, and perhaps the more better accurate, although as pedantic types (you know, tw@ts) will point out it does not follow the traditional structure of an opera "proper". pop opera is another term, as indeed is pot opera. for the sake of simplicity, referring to it (modestly) as the greatest work of art of the twentieth century shall do.

on the off or outside chance that it shall make the slightest bit of difference, then, here is a video i have made from various performances of two quite specific lines from the song 1921. my editing skills at creating these things are, of course, not the greatest, but hopefully it is the gesture what prevails.

regrettably, as those familiar with Tommy shall be all too aware, it is not quite so that the optimism of these lines prevails through the remainder of this song. but, for the sake of positive waves, i encourage you to just embrace the words here for what they are, in isolation, with the really ragged notion that it may have good bearings on the year ahead.

as it happens, i really don't have all that much to add here. this is not the first instance of me being in this position, probably not the final one, and it shall certainly not stop me waffling on around the pictures i have already added.

somewhat fairly obviously, then, i do hope that some form of passing interest entertainment is extracted by my (poorly) edited clip. more so, however, if it inspires you to seek out and listen to the entirety of Tommy, be it the studio recording or any of the live recordings available (with the ones featuring all four original members tending to be the best), well, so much more the better.

even if it was (inexplicably) so that your 2020 happened to be good, let me say that i do wish for your 2021 to be much better than the year before. and, of course, thanks for taking the time to read, look and listen to this.
