month number eight, then, or if you like august. and, as has come to be a tradition, look you see, a regular (actually pretty much monthly) update on whatever calendars i have around the house. this tends to be most useful for those who simply cannot be bothered to purchase their own calendar.

at some stage i shall already have waffled on about how and why the month that is this month, or august, got the name it did. so, i won't again. in general terms, though, the word away from describing a month is used in a descriptive ('adjective') was to infer something (or someone) is respected, indeed impressive. making it a pivotal, symbolic month in which to do important things.

starting off with the Star Wars calendar, and once again it is not quite robots but still helmeted characters being showcased, in this particular instance the so-called stormtroopers who do ever such a good job of defending the empire.

it never, ever gets boring repeating myself here, but yes. them what do the Star Wars have a tendency to absolutely hammer any non-human faced character, for that is less money for them to pay out in royalties and rights. and why not. for what reason would you actively not seek to make as much as you could, and keep similar?

how about dates, anniversaries, observances and similar of note in August? well, as usual, you would do well to celebrate your own, or look at whatever list i did last year. but, we are here now, so here you go.

2 - a very happy birthday indeed to Kristaps Porziņģis, widely regarded as the best, greatest and most important Latvian basketball player in modern history. born this day in 1995, no less.

3 - Christopher Columbus set sail off of Spain on this day in 1492. the rest is kind of, as the saying sometimes goes, history. but note that this was not the first time the Spanish went off and meddled in a country which had nothing to do with them, also it was not the last.

4 - party time for administrative body fans and them f*****g mental lot who are legislative junkies, for it was on this day in 1947 that the Supreme Court of Japan was formed.

7 - on this day in 1988 the single Blind by Talking Heads entered the UK singles chart. at, alas, number 69. the more commercial success enjoyed by the band in the UK was well and truly over, and in truth there was not much life left in the band entire by this point. but they are still great.

8 - celebrated avante garde (or whatever) classic film Transformers The Movie was released on this day in 1986. mostly it is celebrated for being one of the, if not the, final performances by Orson Wells in a film. yes, just providing a voice, he did not transform into anything in the film.

9 - Women's Day is celebrated in South Africa on this very day, so a shout out to all the wonderful ladies of that amazing land which was home for a short while. and a special one to that one lady who followed me. not that she is likely to read this, but it doesn't stop me saying so.

10 - legendary journalist and even more legendary founder of Factory Records (and associated concerns) Tony Wilson passed away on this day in 2007. i would strongly suggest you play some Joy Division, New Order or Happy Mondays at the correct volume in his honour, for he cared not if he bankrupt either himself, Manchester or the whole of the UK in order to make sure their music got heard.

12 - the first successful, working NASA satellite, Echo 1A, was launched on this day in 1960. it was very much phase one of an ambitious, north of a decade long plan to broadcast The King, Elvis Presley live and in concert to the entire world. eventually enough satellites were in place for Him to be able to do this as soon as 1973.

14 - just a jump to the left, for it was on this day (night) that The Rocky Horror Picture Show premiered in London (innit) in 1975. brilliant film, amazing music and still probably the greatest and most accurate ever presentation of an eccentric bisexual transvestite scientist in cinema history.

16 - it is widely claimed that The King, Elvis Presley died (or passed away) on this day in 1977. you are welcome to believe this if you wish, but i have posted several articles which suggest otherwise.

18 - he would say such things suck, but i really like him, so happy birthday to comedy legend Denis Leary, born this day in 1957. despite what the NME review suggested, i still find No Cure For Cancer to be very funny, 27 years on.

22 - what many consider to be the greatest fight never to happen was supposed to happen on this day in 1843. the greatest ever Tipton based prizefighter, William Perry, was due to absolutely batter William "Scouse" Renwick of Liverpool, but Renwick got himself arrested before the fight.

24 - The Rolling Stones released the album Tattoo You on this day in 1981. one of their best and biggest selling, in part due to the record being home to Start Me Up, yet the album is mostly a bunch of older songs quickly sellotaped together at the behest of Jagger who felt it inappropriate to go on tour without an album to promote. times have changed.

26 - both Macaulay Culkin and Chris Pine were born on this day in 1980, meaning it's a happy 40th to either or each of them on this day in 2020. spare a thought for Jack Nicholson on this day, for he must surely wrestle with with of the two birthday parties to attend.

29 - it is so that on this day in 2020, the 50th anniversary of a particularly decent episode of University Challenge was broadcast. now regarded as a show symptomatic of the left wing, cultural elite BBC, back in 1970 this was bunged on to ITV on Sunday afternoons.

31 - one of my all time favourite songs of all time, Travellers Tune by Ocean Colour Scene, enters the UK singles chart at number 5 on this day in 1997. top, bangin' tune it is, feel the vibe, man.

well, if you are looking for a reason, some motivation or an excuse to sporadically and randomly celebrate almost anything in the month, i have every confidence that a couple of those dates shall sate your need.

how about the splendid New Zealand calendar off of Mum & Dad for this month? it's a lovely image of the Purakaunui Falls for your viewing pleasure. and, you know, the calendar bit at the bottom if you would care to make use of it for planning your days. or nights.

if nothing else, i hope that this monthly calendar update has put to sleep one of the great myths of the modern world. for some reason many seem to believe that (or are of the opinion of) August is one of them peculiar months which only has 30 days. not so, there are 31.
