and the trees are stripped bare of all they wear

heya

so, we are in October, look you see. well, if you are reading this at time of publication, or an October in another year, etc. this means we are into the "business" end of the year, the one that the 25% of months which are double digit occupy. or, for the pedantic, the aspect of a year in which close enough to 24.93% of all days of any given year fall within.

as you may well have assumed, and you would indeed have been correct to, October's name stems from some forgotten culture's rather boss way of say "eight", which is variations of oct, such as octavian, octavious, etc. this was once the eight month of the year, in a simpler decimal way of affording measurement and calculation, long before some monks or something interfered and said no, f*** that (or monk equivalent), twelve is the way to go my dudes.

for us north of the equator it is a month in which our light seems to fade, in which a level of frequently grey darkness creeps in, and we are well advised to make preparations for the coming of winter. and yet the lightness and the brightness fights somewhat still, making for a usually lovely month, to be sure. well, i like it.

the makers of my "retro" cars calendar are clearly keen October fans too, for they have opted to beautify the month with hands now, no argument the greatest car ever. yes, this is the classic '74 Ford Cortina. smart green, too, although the murky, dangerous red variation is quality. whereas i tend to have little or no interest in any sort of vehicle beyond the assurance of a smart stereo, given a choice, yes, this is the car i would pick. well, this or a white ford bronco, obviously.

in respect of the calendar presented, once again i trust it is suitable for the curiously high number of you what feel it better to just use the calendar i put up here rather than get your own. let me start planning out exactly what calendar will be used next year.

any dates of consequence in october? certainly, many. 31 in fact. but, to narrow that down to things of significance which happened on select dates, here you go.

2 - on this day in 1995 (What's The Story) Morning Glory, being the second album by Oasis, was released. critics were not overtly keen on it at the time, but fans felt otherwise. although, yes, true, the use of a Gary Glitter sample on the opening track has aged as well as uncooked seafood stored at room temperature.

5 - a very happy birthday indeed to smart hat wearing singer Brian Johnson, born this day in 1947. he is fondly remembered as the lead singer of Geordie, with a lesser known fact being that he also sang for a less successful group called AC/DC.

- the absolutely boss film Demolition Man, starring Denis Leary, Nigel Havers, Wesley Snipes, Sandra Bullocks and others was released on this day in 1993. it is a shame that one of the supporting actors in the film, Sylvester Stallone, generally shuns sequels, as another of these films would have been great.

11 - Bananarama entered the UK singles chart at 22 with Love In The First Degree on this day in 1987. smart tune, it is.

15 - on this day in 1962 the so-called "Cuban missile crisis" kicked off. it led to nuclear war, mutual assured destruction and the death of all life on the planet. well, close.

17 - cheers! happy birthday to Norm, George Wendt, born on this day in 1948.

19 - Magnus Pyke, the thinking man's Frank Muir, sadly passed away on this day in 1992.

22 - the motion picture First Blood was released on this day in 1982. much like Rocky, it was never intended to be regarded as a genre defining "action" film or spawn any sequels. but, it did.

29 - seminal album Welcome To The Beautiful South by The Beautiful South enters the UK album chart at number 2 on this day in 1989. it was kept off of the top spot by Andy and Vince out of Erasure.

31 - all that halloween business, so Ghostbusters costumes at the ready. something else might happen on this day, with marginal effects for the UK and nominal impact for mainland Europe, but we have been given other dates for this and nothing as such as yet.

meanwhile, hanging as loose as free in the kitchen, our Winnie The Pooh calendar takes the frequently unusual step of actually showcasing the titular character for the month. it is with partial interest i note that all forms of socio-political comments have been ignored, and things like halloween, to instead simply show Winnie contemplating stealing honey ("hunny") off of some bees.

right, well, anyway, if you have read this far then i suspect we can agree it is time to draw a line under this. simply move on and get going with the month which lies ahead, i say. if this look at the calendars i have up for the month has in any way assisted with that getting on business, well then so much the better.

be excellent to each other!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
