Manic Single Reviewers

hey everyone

well, it's a little over three weeks away that the Manic Street Preachers unleash the many versions of their National Treasures (ahem) 'complete' singles collection. there remains, interestingly, no official word on the exact tracklisting for the very expensive box set version as such, so this is the last time that will be mentioned in this post.

the band are, however, hitting the promotion trail, and have engaged in a most excellent idea in the latest edition of the NME. i am not sure who suggested it or if they were invited to do it, but the band have given their own "top 40" order for their singles! nice one!

i am hopeful that a certain in-no-way-at-all-grumpy gent shall be able to pick this edition up for me, fingers crossed! apparently it's a rather good article, with some interesting comments from the band about each single. i won't be giving any of the comments away here, but for those interested here is the order in which the band ranks their own singles!

01. Faster
02. A Design for Life
03. Your Love Alone is Not Enough
04. Motorcycle Emptiness
05. If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next

13. Found that Soul
14. Kevin Carter
15. Ocean Spray
16. Some Kind of Nothingness
17. Roses in the Hospital
18. Love's Sweet Exile
19. Let Robeson Sing
20. You Stole the Sun From My Heart
21. Australia

36. Empty Souls
37. So Why So Sad
38. She is Suffering
39. Revol
40. There By the Grace of God

needless to say, some of the rankings have been (to put it mildy) 'controversial' and 'subject to debate' in the world of Manic fandom. which is fair enough. this isn't the band saying "you should like the songs in this order", though, it's just them giving their views and feelings on what they have released. it's also subject to change; for a start i am led to believe a week or so ago the band ranked A Design For Life as number one on a radio show when asked to do the same thing!

i wouldn't wish to take up too much time discussing the whole list, but a few comments for you. the top three here make perfect sense, really. Faster would be the choice of the majority of fans as their best ever single. A Design For Life is an amazing anthem and really put them on a much bigger map than they were previously on. Your Love Alone is hardly a big fan favourite, but it did give them all sorts of commercial success and exposure, and they clearly have fun playing it live. in regards of the latter, the band, in particular the singer James, have expressed a serious dislike for playing Revol and The Everlasting live, which would explain the former's rather low rating but makes how high up, comparatively, the latter is rather curious.

anyway, you all have fun seeing how much you agree or disagree with how the band rate their own stuff!!!!!

be excellent to each other!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
