well, i was lazing away on the couch flicking through the TV guide when suddenly i caught something that very nearly made my eyes pop out of my head. one of my all time top movies, and one that's just about impossible to find anywhere, was coming on in all of five minutes from the time i was sat reading about it!
Hannibal Brooks is easily one of the fun, most enjoyable movies i have ever seen. before today it must be over 20 years since i last saw it, and i remembered it pretty much as it was.
what's it about? the TCM site, for it was TCM that were kind enough to broadcast a lovely looking copy of the film, describe it thus :
A prisoner of war working at a zoo gets the chance to escape from the Germans, so he does and he takes with him the elephant that he's been caring for. Together they head for the Swiss border and freedom.
so, it's Oliver Reed, an elephant (dear, dear Lucy) and World War II in a film by Michael Winner. considering the named human 50% of that equation, perhaps the most dazzling aspect is that it's more or less good, clean family viewing!
now, why exactly one has to catch a chance screening of this superb film on TV is beyond me. considering the copious amount of rubbish thrust onto DVD, why on earth is a magnificent film like this not readily available? i mean, sure, there are one or two sites offering not entirely official copies of the film on disc, but if ever a film warranted a properly restored and released film with a retrospective look, then it's this one.
